The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Foundation kicks off a new crowdfunding campaign this month to raise funds to support Ballet Folklórico at NMSU. This vibrant cultural tradition enriches both the university and local communities.
“These much-needed funds will help preserve and promote the artistry and cultural significance of this dynamic dance form, ensuring that future generations can experience and participate in its enduring legacy,” said Patrick Stewart, vice president of philanthropy and alumni relations at the NMSU Foundation.
Ballet folklórico is the result of a centuries-long fusion of cultures. With twirling skirts, rhythmic footwork, and vibrant pageantry, ballet folklórico reflects the rich fusion of Indigenous, European, and African influences that have shaped its evolution. Today, this traditional Mexican folk dance is celebrated as a living art form, embodying the diverse cultural heritage of New Mexico.
“Folklórico is an essential element of our Pride of New Mexico offerings,” said NMSU associate director of bands, Dr. Steven Smyth. “The group gives these students a place to belong and succeed and helps the greater Borderland community see their culture and art reflected in a very visible way. It is a way we can all show our pride in who we are and what we represent.”
Help Us Reach Our GoalBallet Folklórico and Mariachi Orgullo collaborate frequently. From their animated rhythms on the football field to the intricate choreography on stage, both groups perform traditional pieces and custom arrangements that celebrate culture, create lasting memories, and inspire audiences.
“The dances represent different regions of Mexico, so every performance is a story with a beautiful emotional connection to it,” says Kimberly Robles Gil, one of the 2024 Ballet Folklórico dancers. “My family is from Jalisco, and every time I dance, I feel like I am doing it for my family and my people,” she adds. “It is a big, beautiful way to share our story and take pride in our culture.”
The NMSU Foundation uses GiveCampus, a fundraising platform for nonprofit educational institutions, to safely and securely accept contributions to featured programs. The Foundation’s goal is to raise at least $5,000 to cover the cost of professional performance dance skirts for the student dancers, which can cost as much as $300 per student.
All gifts are tax-deductible. The campaign kicked off September 28 and runs through November 30.
Established in 1959, the Foundation is a privately governed, non-profit corporation. The mission of the NMSU Foundation is to foster long-term relationships with alumni, supporters, and community to secure, manage, steward, and protect a sustainable source of private resources that will enhance the ability of New Mexico State University to fulfill its land-grant mission.
